My Path to Athletic Therapy
I grew up in a small town in Alberta with a love for sports and the community it provided. I played soccer and volleyball throughout high school but had limited opportunities to continue sport after graduating. During my time in sports I had injuries that weren’t managed appropriately and didn’t fully resolve, continuing to affect my ability to play sports and do activities. My love for sports and my own experience with injuries led me to a degree in Athletic Therapy where I learned in depth about the musculoskeletal system and the demands of sports on athlete’s bodies. My education made me passionate to help athletes manage and rehabilitate their injuries appropriately for the demands of their sport. Though no longer involved in sports competitively, I strive to be active, continuing to play sports recreationally, running, strength training, as well as hiking and backpacking.
Career Experience
Going into the Athletic Therapy program at Mount Royal I didn’t know what I was getting myself into but I soon fell in love with the career and being able to work in so many different capacities. I had many opportunities to work with a wide variety of people both athletes and older adults that wanted to continue doing the things they loved. Through the program I got to work with a variety of athletes competing in U Sports, ACAC, high school clubs, as well as the Taekwondo Canadian Open. I had the opportunity to work hands on with athletes from emergency response situations and acute injuries as well as throughout the rehab process.
Since graduating, becoming a certified athletic therapist, and moving to Edmonton, I have endeavored to gain as much experience as I can working with a variety of sports, ages, and levels of competition. I endeavor to understand the goals of each person I work with, to understand what drives them and how I can support them to continue doing what they love - LONGER.
